THE CHORAL MUSIC PROGRAM In just a few short years, the JSerra Choral Program has developed into a robust, inspiring, and award-winning program. Under the leadership of Mr. Brian Dehn, the ensembles take part in four concerts for the JSerra community as well as many other performances in prestigious collegiate and community choral festivals, workshops and concerts. Below is a listing of current choral ensemble offerings at JSerra. Chamber Singers - One of the most vibrant, active and successful groups on campus, the Chamber Singers are preparing for the school year with multiple performances throughout the area. The choral literature draws from multiple languages and styles, from early Renaissance to contemporary time periods, including world folk traditions, liturgical praise and worship and Pop/Broadway Show tunes. Mainly a classical choral ensemble, held to the highest possible standard of musicianship, professionalism and competitive performance, the time commitment is large but the benefits and friendships built are lifelong. In March of 2012, they will have the distinct honor of performing a solo concert on stage in Carnegie Hall, under the direction of Mr. Dehn. According to the concert production company (in business for over 40 years) JSerra is the first Catholic School to have this honor. We are very proud of this amazing group of talented performers. Advanced Women's Ensemble - This is also one of the top groups in the choral program. An auditioned ensemble, they are held to a high standard of musicianship, professionalism, and competitive performance. It is created specifically for the cultivation and exploration of the female vocal instrument and its use in the performance of sophisticated solo and choral literature. Each student masters concepts in choral styles and languages. This is a performance-oriented ensemble and all scheduled performances are mandatory. Men’s Ensemble – The Men’s Ensemble will be of particular interest for those young men that wish to explore and learn more about musical styles, vocal technique and performance. Designed as an entry level group (non-auditioned), concepts such as posture, vocal placement, vowel formation, singing in harmony, balancing with other voices, exploring multiple languages and professional level performance will be introduced and quickly put into practice at multiple concerts a year. This is a performance-oriented ensemble and all scheduled performances are mandatory. Women’s Choir - This is an introductory level course designed to give the female vocal instrument its special environment to grow and mature. The Women’s Choir will explore and learn more about musical styles, vocal technique and performance. Also designed as an entry level group (non-auditioned), concepts such as correct posture, vocal placement, vowel formation, balancing and blending with other treble voices, exploring multiple languages and professional level performance will be introduced and quickly put into practice at multiple concerts a year. This is a performance-oriented ensemble and all scheduled performances are mandatory. Jazz Ensemble – A small group of 8-12 advanced singers who wish to explore the jazz and pop vocal medium in difficult and inspiring arrangements. Filled by audition and only open to students in the advanced ensembles, it is designed to meet outside the school day (meaning no credit or grade given.) This group will perform as desired and warranted by the students and director. Please see our calendar for more details on our activities. Below is also a 'Choral Interest Form'. If you are looking to join this wonderful program, please feel free to fill it out and return it to Mr. Dehn. Our goal at JSCHS, of having a nationally recognized choral music program, will be achieved through our strong faith and a commitment to excellence. Brian Dehn is JSerra’s Choral Music Director.
