Why the College Library is an Important Element in your College Choice
Here is a great article about getting to know the college library when you are visiting colleges you might like to attend. Libraries are typically the hub of a campus. This article from U.S. News & World Report (June 17, 2010) will give you some things to think about when considering the university you want to attend for four years. Click link for article: College Libraries.
NHS Tutoring T/W/Th
NHS students meet in the library after school to offer free tutoring for JSerra students. Here is a typical tutoring schedule:
Tues: Religion & Foreign Language, 3:00-4:30pm
Wed: English & Social Studies, 3:00-4:30pm

Effective School Libraries - New Library Standards under Development
Effective school libraries offer media in various formats making information accessible to every patron. That is our main goal in the JSerra Library Media Center. Print, digital and audio resources are all important components for comprehensive school library collections. The California Department of Education is developing standards which will be added to the ed code describing Model School Libraries. Focus groups are being held in Sacramento and at the OCDE to discuss the draft standards. The draft standards will then be voted on in 2010. If you would like to read the draft California Model School Library Standards, see this link: CDE Standards.
New Library Resources
Please see the What's New page for the latest additions to our collection, both digital and print, along with book trailers for you to watch and enjoy. The library has acquired the poetry anthology written by former JSerra student, Alexa Leigh Corbett, The ID: The Art of Being Human. Alexa graduated in 2009. Also, here is a trailer for our book Gone by Michael Grant. Watch with your sound on.... and please visit the New Books in the Library page for more.
Banned Books Week
Banned Books Week is held each year to acknowledge challenges to intellectual freedom. Did you know that the Harry Potter series, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Little Red Riding Hood have all faced removal from library bookshelves in the United States? Banned Books Week is celebrated each year and highlights our freedom to read and the harms of censorship. Intellectual freedom is the right to access information and express ideas. Perhaps you think that challenges to books cannot possibly still happen today? They do. Here is a map showing Challenges and Banned Books, 2007 to 2009: Map. To see a list of banned and challenged classic literature, see this link from the ALA: Classics.

The OC Public Library has a new historical photo collection with pics from all over OC. There is the Laguna Niguel Regional Park and Alicia Parkway in Aliso Viejo, plus cows in Moulton Ranch. Check out this link: OC Photos. Donations to the Library Collection
I am currently adding to the library collection, but our LMC can always use your help in growing this excellent print resource for our students. Consider buying a magazine subscription for the library, or perhaps donating a reference book, non-fiction materials, or literature that support JSerra curriculum. If you would like ideas, please contact Ms. Swedo anytime. The library can always use more friends. Lost and Found Textbooks
Lost textbooks that are found on campus are sent to the library, where Ms. Swedo keeps them locked up. If the student’s name is in the book, an email is sent to the teacher of that subject for the student to come and retrieve his or her textbook. Please be sure to write the student name in each textbook!
Mission Statement and Goals of the Media Center
The mission of the JSerra Library Media Center ("LMC") is to create an environment in which students and faculty are empowered to be effective users of information and technology in a learning community, according to the standards and practices established by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and written up in a publication called Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning. The goal of the LMC is to ensure that all JSerra students gain information literacy, which is central to becoming lifelong learners. “Effective collaborations with teachers help to create a vibrant and engaged community of learners, strengthen the whole school program as well as the library media program, and develop support for the library media program throughout the whole school” (AASL 51).
Instructional Support
In support of the LMC’s mission to provide a proactive instructional partnership between the classroom and the media center, students receive library instruction throughout each term to teach them to develop information literacy and critical thinking skills, and train them to be effective researchers. Library classes will include library orientation, use of the Dewey decimal system, online library catalogs (OPACs), leased research databases, Big 6 and I-search research work, skills to avoid plagiarism, Internet navigation, website evaluation, critical thinking, MLA 7th edition citation, and much more. The librarian also collaborates with faculty to develop online webquests and directed research projects, based on specific subject areas and tasks. These projects enable JSerra students to use their laptops in the classroom. They are also accessible through the Internet at home.
