Christian Service

JSerra is a Catholic, college preparatory high school whose mission is the formation of young men and women through a balanced education rooted in faith, high academic standards, character, and compassion. We form a community committed to living out our mission to promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to the Magisterium of the Church and to guide our students to become leaders who live in accordance with Gospel values. We believe the students are not powerless. God created each of you for a purpose. In the Gospel Jesus says that each of child is chosen; each of them is appointed. This is what the word “vocation” means. Christ calls each of you to the task of loving – and He promises that your love will not only bear fruit, but fruit which abides. In other words, lives motivated by love have meaning. They’re fertile. They shape the future by filling it with new life – both in spirit and in the laughter of children. We ask the sons and daughters of JSerra to answer the call of Jesus heard in Matthew 25: 35-40: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “The righteous will answer Him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Each student is require to serve 20 hours of Christian Service each year of attendance at JSerra. JSerra students perform the corporal works of mercy: they feed the hungry; give drink to the thirsty; clothe the naked; shelter the homeless; visit the sick and the imprisoned, and bury the dead. There is an organization list located on the Christian Service portion of the JSerra web page indicating all the approved organizations. This is not an exclusive list and our students are encouraged to look beyond the existing list to other possibilities. All activities beyond the existing list however, must be approved by me. In order to receive credit hours served, all students are required to fill out the Student Service Project Report Form located on the website. If you plan to serve an organization or need not indicated on the list, submit your written request to my office. Please state the name of the organization, its purpose and service you will render. Submit the Parent Permission and Release form for all placements. If necessary, submit the media permission and release form. At the completion of your placement fill out and submit to the office the Student Service Project report. You will be evaluated by your placement supervisors about your attitude, effectiveness, promptness, and generosity on a scale of excellent, good, fair, or poor while serving your Christian Service commitment (Student Evaluation Form). You may not be supervised or evaluated by a family member or close friend for this program. The following forms are available below:
It is my hope that each of you will find that by living for others, the joy of the Lord will be your strength. I know that you will grow in wisdom and grace. God Bless you.
