Clubs / Organizations

JSerra Catholic High School offers a variety of activities, clubs, and organizations, providing many opportunities for each student to become engaged in the JSerra community. Students who wish to start a new club or activity should contact Judy Luttrell via email or telephone at (949) 493-9039. This year’s annual Activities Fair and Club Membership Drive resulted in the continuation of several existing clubs and fostered the formation of new ones, listed below.

Academic Decathlon

Moderator: Maria Nyambu
Academic Decathlon encourages, acknowledges, and rewards academic excellence by motivating and preparing high school students through a series of academic events. This club typical meets during lunch. In competition season it may also meet after school and on weekends.

Associated Student Body

Moderator: Chris Plaia
The Associated Student Body is a governing body of students who have been elected by their peers to lead the student body in activities such as dances and rallies. ASB also provides leadership in student government issues. This leadership group meets as a class before school. Some general ASB meetings are held during lunch.

Bee Keeping Club

Moderator: Fr. Vincent
The Bee Keeping Club is a club open to all students interested in learning about building their own personal bee hives. The dues cover the cost for a bee keeping outfit and a small hive. This club meets after school.

California Scholarship Federation

Moderator: Betty Cappelletti
California Scholarship Federation is an academic organization that recognizes academic accomplishments in tangible ways during the school year through awards ceremonies.

Campus Ministry

Moderator: Francis Cabildo
Campus Ministry is an umbrella title that incorporates students helping with our school music ministry at Masses, retreat ministry, and promotes community. Meetings are often during lunch and sometimes after school.

Caritas Christi Service Club

Moderator: Bridget Desmond
The Caritas Christi Club serves the JSerra school and community during Masses, open houses, and community outreach endeavors. They also host JSerra’s annual Kids-4-Kids Christmas Party for the extended JSerra community. This club meets after school.

Cheerleading

Moderator: Melea Walden
JSerra offers JV Cheer, Varsity Cheer, and Varsity Song. Cheerleaders are selected in the spring for the following year’s squads. Students interested in trying out must contact Miss Walden for tryout dates. Practices are typically after school.

Chess Club

Moderator: Joe Bakhos
The Chess Club meets during lunch time and occasionally after school to match chess wits with like-minded students. The club also welcomes students interested in learning how to play chess.

Cycle Club

Moderator: John Stackowicz
The Cycle Club provides students with opportunities to ride within a Christian atmosphere, build community, build cycling skills, and to practice safe cycling. Most meetings are after school. Rides are typically on weekends.

Equestrian Club

Moderator: Lisa Gabriel
The Equestrian Club competes as a team and provides opportunities for students who enjoy horses or who wish to learn about horses to spend time with them and to compete in local horse shows. Riders do not have to own a horse to participate in the club. This group typically meets after school. Riding events are on weekends.

Fencing Club

Moderator: Jan Kilduff
The Fencing Club members study and practice competitive fencing techniques in a safe school environment. Members practice fencing as a means for learning discipline, responsibility, and respect for others. This club meets after school and has occasional field trips to local fencing events in the evening.

Haiti Club

Moderator: Jami LaFave
The Haiti Club has a mission to raise money for orphanages in Haiti. Club members plan, promote, and host the annual Father-Daughter dance. This club meets after school.

Hockey Club

Moderator: Dustin Widner
The Roller Hockey Club participates in a high school league where JSerra students compete with other local high school teams. This is not a CIF sanctioned sport. The club meets after school to practice and compete.

International Language Club

Moderator: Tom Smith
The International Language Club encompasses the multilingual students on campus to share their skills and heritage with each other and the school. The club meets after school and club members also participate in field trips after school.

Journey Safe

Moderator: Cara Pizzolo
Journey Safe is a club dedicated to promoting safe driving practices of teenage drivers. The club helps organize a Walk-a-Thon in the spring to raise funds for the purpose of driving safety education. This club meets during lunch and sometimes after school.

Junior Classical League

Moderator: Melissa Mack
The Junior Classical League is for the student interested in in-depth study of the influence of Latin in today’s culture. This club meets after school.

Junior Statesmen of America

Moderator: Elizabeth Stair
The Junior Statesmen of America engages high school students in the political issues that challenge our nation. Students develop effective leadership sills by running political awareness activities at school and overnight conventions. This club meets in the morning before school.

Make a Wish Club

Moderator: Andy Sulick
The JSerra Make a Wish club is part of the National Make a Wish Organization. Each year the students commit to raising $4,000 to make children’s wishes come true. The students raise some of this money by hosting the Sadie Hawkins Dance in the spring. This club meets after school.

Model United Nations

Moderator: Megan Breen
Model United Nations is a simulation education activity focusing on civics, communications, globalization, and multilateral diplomacy. MUN students assume the role of international diplomats. Students do research, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, develop solutions to world problems, and participate in a simulated session of intergovernmental organization (IGO). This club meets after school and student-delegates attend weekend conferences throughout the year in order to participate fully.

Music Club

Moderator: Jeff Kahl
The Music Club meets twice a month after school with students who play an instrument and are interested in “jamming” together. The students also perform in the School Talent Show in the spring.

Musical Theatre Production

Moderator: Carol DeBoisblanc
JSerra presents a school musical each year in the spring. The 2007-2008 school musical will be April 25, 26, and 27. Auditions, rehearsals, and performances are after school, in the evening, and some weekends.

National Honor Society

Moderator: Beth Meyers
National Honor Society is an honor society that recognizes a student’s outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

Operation Smile

Moderator: Kevin Williams
Operation Smile is a not-for-profit medical organization that provides cleft-palate and cleft-lip surgeries to children in developing countries. Club members coordinate fundraisers, work to raise awareness about the need of cleft-palate and cleft-lip surgeries in developing countries, attend student leadership conferences, and sometimes go on medical missions. This club meets after school.

Peru Club

Moderator: Carlos Solorzano
The Peru Club supports and promotes humanitarian efforts by adopting a high school in Piura, Peru. Club members organize fundraisers, correspond with orphans, and some members visit Piura during Easter break. This club meets after school.

Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA)

Moderator: Melea Walden
RCIA is an extension of the Religion department’s mission. RCIA offers an opportunity for continual conversion and the opportunity to receive Sacraments of Initiation through partnership with Mission Parish in San Juan Capistrano. This club meets on weekends.

Songleading

Moderator: Tiffany Chen
Song leaders are selected in the spring for the following year’s squads. Students interested in trying out must contact Miss Chen for tryout dates. Tryouts and practices are after school and some evenings.

Soul Sisters

Moderator: Cara Pizzolo
Soul Sisters is a club for JSerra girls. Members meet in an informal environment for sleep over lock-ins at school a couple of times a year, go formal dress shopping before Winter formal and Prom, and have movie nights This club meets after school and on weekends.

Spirit Club

Moderators: Tiffany Chen
The Spirit Club is a club that meets to decorate, cheer, and create school spirit around major school events, such as Homecoming, football games, basketball games, and school pep rallies. This club meets after school.

Splendor of Life Club

Moderator: Carmen Ribera
The Splendor of Life Club bears Christian witness to the beauty and sanctity of life through prayer and action. The Splendor of Life Club promotes respect for life and recognizes life as a valuable gift from our Creator. This club meets after school and gets together some weekends.

Surf Club

Moderator: Orion Gardner
The Surf Club competes as a team in local competitions. The club meets during lunch to plan for competitions and surfs before and after school.
