Sailing

The program works to instill a love of being on the water while developing seamanship and skills for the lifetime sport of sailing. Members compete for JSerra in regattas held by the Interscholastic Sailing Association's (ISSA), Pacific Division (PCISA), Southern League (SoCal). About forty regional high schools compete in five SoCal races from Long Beach to San Diego spread over the whole school year. Students register and join the team for a semester at a time. Additional racing opportunities may be made available as well as the annual Jeff Adam Memorial Regatta, JAMR.

Founded in the fall of 2014, the JSerra Sailing Team was the first high school sailing program in Dana Point Harbor's recent 20-year history. Begun with only three boats, our sailors now have the use of eleven CFJ's purchased by the Dana Point Harbor Youth Foundation (DPHYF). Other local teens share the coaches, assets, and beautiful yacht club facilities with our team and thus provide competitive sailors at our practices to drive us all to improve. We have appreciated the tremendous support from both yacht clubs in Dana Point Harbor, DPHYF, and the local community.

ELIGIBILITY AND CREDITS

Any JSerra student who enjoys the ocean, would like to learn to sail, or enjoys being on a competitive team should take advantage of this unique high school opportunity provided in the harbor which is just a ten-minute drive down the freeway.

JSerra students are welcome to join our co-ed team at the start of each semester. No prior sailing knowledge or experience is necessary. Five PE credits are earned for each semester of committed participation. Additionally, members may earn Varsity Letters for participation on the JSerra Sport Club Team

PRACTICES

Practices are held in Dana Point Harbor from 3:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursday and 10:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Experienced coaching is provided by Dana West Yacht Club (DWYC) with Coach Tyler Welk and Coach Daniel Lockhart. Boats provided by the Dana Point Harbor Youth Foundation are two-man CFJs and 420s. SoCal regattas are raced in CFJs.

Space is necessarily limited on the Sailing Team. Registration is not yet available. Returning sailers will be able to register shortly but new applicants must check for availability and receive their registration instructions from Mrs. Adam at wadam@jserra.org.
