JSerra Catholic High School announced today that Pat Harlow will be the new Head Football Coach. After carefully considering many strong applications for this position, Coach Harlow jumped out quickly as the best fit for the Lions football program.

Marine Corps Community Services once again teamed up with JSerra Catholic High School from San Juan Capistrano, Calif., to host its annual Combat Center Toy Giveaway where they gave away approximately 1,500 toys to 1,500 Combat Center patrons.

This past weekend my family and I were attending Mass at Mission Basilica here in San Juan Capistrano. As we were preparing to leave church at the end of the service, I felt a tap on my shoulder. When I turned around, I was greeted by one of our alumna, Kallin Zehren '13. After exchanging a few pleasantries, the conversation quickly turned to her plans for life beyond Tulane University when she graduates this coming May. Grinning from ear to ear, she shared with me the great news that she had just committed to a two-year stint as a missionary for FOCUS -- Fellowship for Catholic University Students. The organization's simple goal is "to win the hearts of college students, build them in faith, and send them out into the world."

Today I met my new friend Carlita, and all I could think about was the word "kinship." The girls ushered us into a room and danced for us. I looked around seeing everyone clap with huge smiles on their faces, so happy to see this communal kinship with their own eyes.

November's Lion of the Month is a true, unsung hero of JSerra. Mrs. Debbie Garner is the face of our attendance office, and probably every student and parent has interacted with her during their time at JSerra. Whether you need to call your student out early or arrive late to school, Debbie graciously handles all situations with kindness, patience, and ease.

In an historic first, the JSerra Boys and Girls Cross Country teams swept the Trinity League Championships at Central Park in Huntington Beach last Friday. This marks the seventh consecutive league title for the JSerra girls and the first for the boys, also making this the first time in Trinity League history that a single school has won both championships in the first year.

Alumnus '15 Sam Philippi continues spreading the JSerra philosophy of faith, intellect and character now as a student and football safety at the University of Pennsylvania. October's Lion of the Month is sophomore Christian Schrodt. Schrodt ('19) is a member of the Engineering Magnet, the 3D Printing Club, and the Robotics Club. He excels not only in designing 3D objects, but having them printed and put to the test. Earlier this year, Christian designed and printed a life-size ukulele that he uses regularly!

The month of October has been recognized in the Catholic Church as Respect Life Month. Students from JSerra Catholic High School's AP Studio Art classes designed their projects to reflect the "Beauty and Dignity of the Human Person."

The JSerra Speaker Series returned with a bang on October 13 with the always engaging Father Greg Boyle. Father Boyle is the founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles — the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world. JSerra Catholic High School announced today that Christopher Ledyard will become the new full-time athletic director, starting October 3, 2016. Joining JSerra from Wintersville, Ohio, Ledyard has spent more than twenty years at the helm of the athletic program at Franciscan University in Steubenville.
