The Christian Service Program is an essential part of the JSerra educational experience. The Christian Service Program is integral to the religious education and spiritual formation program.
Through the various service experiences, the program seeks to develop the virtues of compassion, generosity, and charity in each student through the practice of corporal and spiritual works of mercy, especially as it relates to the underprivileged and disenfranchised.
The service experience will be fulfilled through projects under the direction of the Christian Service Director. The projects will complement the religion curriculum taken during the student;s religion course for the year, and will involve the application of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.
The service program is a requirement for graduation and consists of a minimum of 20 hours per year to be completed in either the first or second semester of each year. Under this program, each student’s time and talents are dedicated to an agency serving a poor or needy population, demonstrating one or more of the corporal or spiritual works of mercy. Their service is offered after school, on weekends, and over school vacations. Every student will be required to attend Reflection Group Meetings and complete reflection activities throughout the semester in which the project is completed. These sessions are intended to complement the students’ activities by offering the opportunity to reflect and discuss the experience of their successes, frustrations, and the value in serving others.
Students are encouraged to select a different service experience for each academic year.
All service project work is documented through the completion of the Christian Service Forms available in the Christian Service Office. A grade of Credit is recorded on the student’s transcript and report card upon successful completion of the project.
Detailed registration and release forms are available in the adjacent downloads section. If you have any questions regarding possible service projects, please contact Bridget Desmond via email or telephone at (949) 493-9307.
