The inspirational story of JSerra alumnus, Landon Sachs (’23), was featured on the Tennis Channel, a US digital cable and satellite television network devoted solely to the game of tennis, during the recent US Open in New York City.
At the age of eight, Sachs was injured in a family tragedy. Paralyzed from the waist down and wheelchair-bound since that event, his passion for sports could not be contained. It was at JSerra Catholic High School that one of his teachers, Amy Hemphill, learned of his drive to compete in the athletic arena and encouraged him to take up tennis.
Sachs' natural athleticism became evident almost immediately and his skills improved rapidly. In just the span of a year, Sachs became one of the top wheelchair tennis players in the nation. He is the only high school student in Orange County to play with able-bodied athletes; and although scholarships for adaptive players are rare, Sachs was awarded and accepted a Division 1 scholarship to the University of Arizona to play adaptive tennis.
