JSerra Beats Long Beach Poly and Advances to the Quarter Finals
JSerra vs Long Beach Poly

Game Recap: Football | Friday, November 2, 2018

Long Beach, Calif -- JSerra garners a convincing win over Long Beach Poly in the first-round playoffs of Trinity League finals tonight at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. The Lions dominated the first half with defense forcing four turnovers and offense scoring touchdowns on three of the four take-aways.

Long Beach came into the game rested following a bye week, while the Lions entered the field still riding the waves of their 42-17 victory over Santa Margarita. JSerra quickly proved to be the more aggressive team stripping the Jack Rabbits of the ball in their first drive of the evening.

JSerra's offense leaned on their rushing game, heavily utilizing junior Chris Street to move the ball downfield. Street showcased his strength and agility running the ball between tackles, while zig-zagging, spinning, and diving to maximize yards gained with every play and scoring two touchdowns in the first half.

Streets first touchdown of the game followed a passing play from Senior Caden Bell to senior Tarik Luckett with a tiptoe catch bringing the JSerra's possession of the ball to the 15-yard line. A hand off to Street in the following play brought the ball straight up the middle for touchdown JSerra. (7-0) (9:26 Q1)

Sophomore Jasper Lott scored his first Varsity touchdown on a play action pass following a run by Chris Street. Caden Bell threw a short pass to Lott from the seven-yard line into the end zone for the Lions second touchdown of the game. (14-0) (10:02 Q2)

Offense hammered the Jack Rabbits in JSerra's next drive with Street picking up 29 yards on a run, sophomore Sammy Green aiding in moving the ball, and senior Munir McClaine out jumping heavy coverage to grab a pass out of the air for completion and first down. Street's impressive next running play included stopping on a dime, 360 spin and acceleration into the end zone for his second touchdown, putting JSerra up 21-0. (4:06 Q2)

JSerra's defense returned for more of the same in the second half quickly forcing a fumble by Long Beach Poly and the 5th turnover of the night. Following unproductive drives by both JSerra and Poly, JSerra scored on their next possession digressing from their Bell to Street formula. Bell is flushed out of the pocket and runs the ball finishing with a slide for first down. A late hit draws yellow flags on the Jack Rabbits and the Lions gain 15-yards on the penalty.

In one of the most unique plays of the evening, wide receiver Tarik Luckett runs the ball to the 2nd yard line following a screen pass from Bell, then executes a forward lateral pass to JSerra's center, senior Caden Blyth, for touchdown. (28-0) (5:45 Q3)

With 10:42 left in the fourth quarter and JSerra on fourth down and 10, the Lions bring out their special teams for a field goal attempt. In an unexpected twist, the field goal is faked, and senior Tyler Shimomura throws a bombshell to sophomore Jaden Genova for touchdown. (35-0) (10:37 Q4)

Long Beach scores their first touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter with a long return on kickoff to the 10-yard line followed by a completion for goal with 8:40 to go in the game. (35-9)

Shimomura gains 25 yards on reception on the Lions' next drive, bringing the ball to the 3rd yard line. Junior running back Anthony Ward finishes the deal leaping over the defensive line and punching the ball into the end zone for his 6th rushing touchdown of the season. (42-9) (8:40 Q4).

The clock winds down with a score of JSerra 42-9. The win improves the Lions record to 9-2 and Lowers Long Beach Poly's to 8-3.

Next up: Jserra will face off against Oaks Christian at home on Friday, November 9th at 7:00pm as they advance to the quarter finals in CIF-SS playoffs.
