JSerra Captures 19-0 Shutout Win vs. OLu

Recap: JSerra Varsity Football | Friday, October 25, 2019

Santa Ana, CA –The JSerra Lions Varsity Football team took down the Orange Lutheran Lancers 19-0 in a "bounce back" away Trinity League win on Friday evening at Santa Ana Stadium.

With only 2 possessions in the first half, JSerra made the second one count. The Lions jump-started a six minute drive with an 18-yard run by senior Chris Street for first down. The drive finished with Senior quarterback Garrett Phillips connecting with sophomore Keyan Burnett in the end zone on an 8-yard pass for touchdown. Posting the first points of the game, JSerra took the lead 7-0 with under a minute remaining in the 2nd quarter.

Junior Sammy Green blasted into the second half with a kickoff return for touchdown, only to be called back on penalty. Not to be denied, the Lions commenced with an 88-yard, 8 minute drive culminating with Street powering through and over the Lancers' defense for a 3-yard rushing touchdown.

A 15-yard penalty was called on the Lions and assessed on the kick — the PAT fell short. The Lions extended their lead to 13-0 with 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter.

One minute and three plays into Olu's next possession, senior Keegan Netherton delivered the Lions' third touchdown of the game. Netherton scored on an interception returned for nearly 50-yards into the end zone - stiff arming a Lancer defender at the 15-yard line and outrunning a trailing posse of OLu defenders.

The Lions fell short in an attempted 2 point conversion and JSerra's lead stretched to 19-0, with 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter.

JSerra's defense shut down the Lancers at the Lions' 10 yard line, following a 4-minute 43-yard drive, taking over on downs with 8 minutes remaining in the game. JSerra's defense continued to hammer the Lancers' offense for the remainder of the quarter, delivering the Lions' 19-0 shutout for their second Trinity League win of the season.

Senior Jaden Genova led the Lions defense with 7 tackles (2 for loss of yards), and 1 assist. Juniors Uiti Moe and Zamaja Duncan tallied 4 tackles each, with Moe also notching a QB sack. Juniors Siale Suliafu, Max Carvalho and Sammy Green added another 3 tackles each to the impressive Lions defensive stats.

Head Coach Pat Harlow commented on the rebound win after last weeks loss to Servite, "They just played well," Harlow said. "They did what they were supposed to do. Defense played awesome."

Harlow continued, "Shutting out anybody in today's football is almost unheard of, so this is big...They played well, had fun and played for each other."

The win improves JSerra's record to 6-3 overall, 2-2 in League.
