Junior Anthony Grover Qualifies for Foot Locker Nationals; Senior Peter Herold Barely Misses the Cut

JSerra Anthony Grover Western Regional

Junior Anthony Grover two-time Individual State Championship raced at the Foot Locker Western Regional on the legendary Mt. SAC course along with team mate senior Peter Herold. Grover finished fourth in a time of 15:37.6 qualifying for Nationals. Peter Herold took 14th in 15:59.8, just eleven seconds off the final qualifying spot.

It's been a remarkable season for these two great distance runners, and their respective finishes at Regionals are the best in JSerra history. Only the top ten runners in each of the four regions are selected for Nationals, meaning that just forty runners from around America qualified to compete next weekend.

Head Coach Marty Dugard wrote to his team parents and athletes in an email saying, "It is with great sadness that Pete's season comes to an end. He's a true warrior and his time of 15:58 for a hilly 5k is a championship level effort. One day that kid is either going to be President of the United States or a Navy SEAL commander (perhaps both), and we'll all say we knew him when."

Grover was in close contention for the win, which Coach Dugard believes will be a motivating factor for this weekend's competition. Footlocker Nationals will take place at hilly, historic Balboa Park in San Diego. Dugard shared, "It's to be a full weekend for Tony, featuring two nights at the Hotel Del with the other qualifiers, and a couple banquets hosted by the people at Footlocker. Sweet."

Next Up: Anthony Grover moves on to the Foot Locker National Championships racing at Balboa Park, San Diego on Saturday morning, December 8th - 10:00 a.m. start for the boys race. Good Luck Anthony!
