Thomas Rocher ’28 Earns Second at State Surf Championships

There are moments in athletics when talent is obvious—but what leaves a lasting impression is something deeper: composure, discipline, and the quiet confidence that comes from preparation.

For JSerra sophomore Thomas Rocher ’28, the Scholastic Surf Series Individual State Championships became exactly that kind of moment.

Competing against the top surfers in the state, Thomas delivered an exceptional performance, earning a second-place finish and establishing himself among California’s elite high school surfers.

A Performance Built on Consistency

From the opening heats to the final round, Thomas surfed with clarity and control. Each wave reflected not only technical skill, but intention—polished footwork, strong wave selection, and a style that stood out in a competitive field.

He advanced steadily through each heat, never rushed, never out of rhythm. By the time he reached the finals, it was clear he belonged there. And when it mattered most, he delivered.

Growth Over Time

Under the guidance of Coach Jeff Novello, Thomas has continued to grow not only as a surfer, but as a teammate and competitor. This year’s result builds on Thomas’s third-place finish at last year’s State Championships—an arc of steady progress that speaks to more than natural ability. It reflects commitment; discipline; and a willingness to be coached, to improve, and to approach each opportunity with purpose.

More Than a Result

What stands out most about Thomas is not just where he finished, but how he competes. He is known among his teammates as highly coachable, steady, and supportive—someone who represents JSerra with humility and respect, both in and out of the water. In a sport shaped by unpredictability, Thomas brings something rare: consistency of character. And that, more than any placement, is what defines the moment.

Looking Ahead

A second-place finish at the State Championships is a remarkable achievement. But for Thomas, it feels less like a finish line and more like a marker along the way. The work continues. The growth continues. And the horizon is wide open.
