Three-peat! JSerra Reigns Supreme as CIF-SS D1 Champions
Recap: Girls Soccer | February 23, 2019
Downey, Calif. -JSerra Girls soccer, No. 1 seed and ranked No. 2 nationally, took on Los Alamitos, No. 2 seed and ranked No. 3 nationally, for the CIF-SS D1 Championship on Saturday evening.
Undefeated, the Lions were looking for their third straight CIF-SS title against an equally undefeated team. In a battle of opposing styles, the Lady Lions came out victorious with a 3-0 win over Los Alamitos.
JSerra spent the first 15 minutes following the kickoff holding behind the 35-yard line, allowing Los Alamitos to juggle the ball back and forth unchallenged. Then, with a sudden flip of a switch, JSerra stepped up the offense and began hammering relentless attacks.
Shortly following the shift in offense, a long throw from the right corner by Bella Beltran found junior Jennifer Alvarado in the box who put it through for the first goal of the game.
With one-minute left in the first half, Sam Williams arched a ball on a corner kick towards the far post. With a well-timed jump, Bella Beltran lowered her head and knocked the ball past the goal keep. The Lions took a 2-0 lead over Los Alamitos.
Los Alamitos turned up the offense in the second half and began orchestrating numerous attacks on goal. Junior Kendell Fritz dominated on defense for the lions answering every attack with a sweeping kick or giant lob, clearing the ball out of harm's way.
For each attempt that found its way past the iron wall that was Fritz, right defender junior Jordan Gather and left defender junior Kennedy Carter, goal keep junior Ryan Campbell was on the ready to cover, deflect, or power kick the ball to the opposing side of the field.
Regardless of the 2-0 lead, the Lady Lions remained in attack mode until the very end. With 11 seconds left in the game, senior Isabella D'Aquila found a hole on a throw in and drilled one to the back of the net. The goal capped the 3-peat for JSerra, winning the CIF-SS Division 1 Championship 3-0 over Los Alamitos.
The win improves JSerra's record to 19-0-3 and lowers Los Alamitos's record to 26-1-4.
Next Up: The Lady Lions head off to the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs. Isabella D'Aquila's high school career comes to a perfect end with a goal in her third CIF-SS championship win. She flies off Sunday to join the U.S. under-20 national team camp and will not be available to play on with the team.
