The Patrick Ahle Law Magnet

Made possible through the generosity of Todd and Lorena Emerson

For students who enjoy critical thinking, persuasive communication, and making a difference through leadership and justice.

Law is about more than understanding the legal system—it is about pursuing justice with wisdom, service, and integrity.

The Patrick Ahle Law Magnet Program, made possible through the generosity of Todd and Lorena Emerson, helps students become analytical thinkers, persuasive communicators, and ethical leaders. Through honors coursework, courtroom simulations, mock trial, mentorship from legal professionals, and real-world experiences, students develop skills that prepare them for college and future opportunities in law, business, government, public service, and beyond.

A Mentor With Decades of Courtroom Experience

Meet Patrick Ahle

The program is led by Patrick Ahle, former prosecutor and longtime legal educator whose mentorship, professional experience, and personal investment in students have become central to the culture of the Law Magnet Program.

Mr. Ahle brings decades of legal, teaching, and public-service experience to JSerra’s Law Magnet Program. He served as a City of Anaheim prosecutor for more than 21 years, including 16 years as assistant city attorney, and taught as an adjunct professor at Chapman University’s Fowler School of Law from 2003 through 2021.

Mr. Ahle joined JSerra in 2012 and founded the Law Magnet Program. Through classroom instruction, courtroom simulations, mock trial, and mentorship, he helps students understand both the practice of law and the responsibility legal professionals have to pursue justice and serve the community.

The purpose of the law is to serve people. Law Magnet students are the future leaders of our community. The program's faculty and Advisory Board are committed to sharing our training, experience, and education with these students to make the world a better place.

Beyond the Courtroom

Whether they pursue careers in law, business, public service, or another profession, Law Magnet students graduate with the confidence, character, and critical thinking skills to lead with integrity and make a meaningful impact in their communities.

Public Speaking & Confidence

Students become comfortable presenting ideas clearly and persuasively.

Leadership & Collaboration

Mock trial fosters teamwork, preparation, accountability, and resilience.

Ethical Formation

Students explore justice, integrity, service, and moral responsibility through a Catholic lens.

College Preparation

The rigor of the program prepares students exceptionally well for collegiate academics and future graduate study.

Mock Trial & Competition

Learning through real advocacy experience.

JSerra's award-winning Mock Trial program gives students the opportunity to develop courtroom skills through authentic, hands-on legal experience. Each spring, JSerra hosts a Mock Trial tournament, welcoming teams from across Orange County to compete.

Working alongside an experienced coaching staff, students prepare case materials, develop trial strategy, and present their arguments in multiple rounds of competition. Setting the program apart, JSerra develops an original murder trial case packet each year, giving students the opportunity to investigate, prepare, and litigate a unique case from start to finish.

JSerra also hosts a Junior High Mock Trial Tournament each February, introducing students in grades 6–8 to the fundamentals of trial advocacy while inspiring the next generation of aspiring legal professionals.

More Than a Magnet

Law Magnet students and their families enjoy community and make lifelong connections through fun, annual traditions.

The Patrick Ahle Law Magnet Program is also a close-knit community. Students build lasting relationships through mock trial, advisory-board dinners, seasonal gatherings, and the annual senior awards banquet. These traditions allow students to connect with classmates, alumni, attorneys, judges, and community leaders who share their interest in law and public service.

State-of-the-Art Courtroom Classroom

A learning environment unlike any other high school program.

JSerra’s dedicated courtroom classroom transforms the educational experience by immersing students in an authentic legal environment where they practice advocacy, argumentation, procedure, and public speaking daily.
