Honors Anatomy & Physiology Students Experience the Journey of Human Life Through Yearlong Project

Through a unique yearlong project, Honors Anatomy & Physiology students explore the science, complexity, and beauty of human development in a deeply meaningful way. Through Mrs. Waterman’s Fetal Development Project, students follow the remarkable journey of human life from conception to birth—exploring the anatomical and physiological changes experienced by both mother and baby each month along the way.

As part of the project’s third-quarter milestone, the classroom transforms into a celebration complete with a baby shower and gender reveal, where students discover whether their assigned “baby” is a boy or a girl. The experience brings science to life in a memorable and engaging way while giving students a deeper appreciation for the complexity and beauty of human development.

But the project extends beyond academics. In conjunction with the celebration, students collect diapers to donate to a local shelter, turning the experience into an opportunity for service and compassion for families in need.

The journey culminates on the seniors’ final day of school—their baby’s “due date”—when each student receives a personalized birth story inspired by real experiences shared by JSerra faculty and staff. The result is a meaningful and unforgettable conclusion to a project that blends scientific discovery, creativity, empathy, and community.

Through hands-on experiences like these, JSerra students are challenged not only to learn deeply, but also to grow in compassion, perspective, and appreciation for the gift of life.
