Two-Factor Authentication

Due to growing cybersecurity concerns, and a desire to protect student information, we will be enforcing two-factor authentication for all JSerra student Office365 accounts beginning in January of 2022.

What This Means
When signing in to your JSerra email account, or any software/cloud service that utilizes your JSerra email account to sign in, you will need to type in your password (first form of authentication), then use a second method of authentication to confirm that it is you accessing the account.

Methods of two-factor authentication

Microsoft Authenticator

(Preferred and most secure!)

  • Can be downloaded onto your mobile phone or device (Android and Apple).
  • Requires you to simply approve a pop-up notification using your phone's local security method (fingerprint/facial recognition/passcode).
  • Also have the option to have a 6-digit code available in the app that refreshes every 30 seconds.
  • See below for instructions.

Authy App

(Can be installed on your laptop if you do not have a mobile phone or device)

  • See below for instructions.

Text message

  • A code will be texted to your mobile phone whenever you need to authenticate into a JSerra account.

Software and Services affected

The following software and services are tied to your JSerra Office365 account and will require two-factor authentication to access them:

  • Email
  • OneDrive
  • Teams
  • Office365 Suite on the web
  • Office365 Suite installed on your computer (Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Schoology
  • PowerSchool
  • Savaas

When you will be using two-factor authentication

You will be prompted to use two-factor authentication every 90 days if you choose to remember the device that you are authenticating on.

  • Example 1: If you log into Outlook or Schoology in Chrome browser, you will be prompted for a password, then your second form of authentication. If you click to remember the device, you will not be prompted to authenticate again for 90 days.
  • Example 2: If you authenticate your Office365 installation (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) on your computer, you will not be prompted to authenticate again for 90 days.

You will be prompted to use two-factor authentication when logging into any of the previously listed software and services on a new device (computer or mobile).

  • If you choose to remember the device, you will not be prompted again for 90 days.
  • It is not recommended to "remember device" when logging into public computers.

How This Affects Campus Cell Phone Policy

  • If your laptop or device prompts you to authenticate while in class, you should let your teacher know and it will be at their discretion to allow you to do so.
