Caritas Christi

Caritas Christi was started in 2005 with the purpose of serving the community of JSerra Catholic High School. Its name expresses its purpose and is taken from the very powerful and inspiring sentence found in 2 Corinthians 5:14: "Caritas Christi urget nos" — meaning, “the love of Christ urges us on." Since its foundation, members of Caritas Christi have been recognized for leadership, loyalty, generous service, good academic standing, and character. Caritas Christi members serve at the will of their community with grace and charity.

Eligibility Requirements and Membership Obligations

Qualifications and Eligibility

Caritas members must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 at the end of their first semester of their junior year. They must have had no major disciplinary infractions while at JSerra. They must possess the quality of service that is defined by the voluntary contributions made by them to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. They must be students who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. Most importantly, they are men and women of character. The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.

Selection Process

At the end of the first semester of the junior year, a request is made for a list of all junior students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above. That list is then sent to all administrators and teachers with the request that each vote for those juniors who meet the qualifications for Caritas Christi. Their recommendation should be based on service, leadership, and character. Students may not lobby or otherwise request that teachers vote for them.

Nominees may not have any incidence of academic integrity.

The votes from teachers are counted and those in the top 40 are interviewed by current Caritas Members in groups of 3 or 4. All nominees are given the opportunity to answer a series of written questions regarding their understanding of the obligations of Caritas Christi and their willingness and ability to actively participate.

A meeting is held with all current Caritas members to discuss the interviews. One person in each interview team discusses the positive findings for those interviewed. Any current member during this discussion can add positive information regarding any of the nominees.

The members then vote for the nominees who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of character, scholarship, leadership and service. Membership is an honor and a commitment. It is a privilege, not a right. Not all students are awarded membership. Even if a student meets all of the requirements, membership is not guaranteed. After the votes are tabulated the top 25 students are offered membership with the approval of JSerra Administration.

Honor Code

All members must sign and abide by the following Honor Code:

As a member of Caritas Christi and out of a desire to honor God, I commit to a lifestyle which reflects trust, honesty, and respect for my peers, authority, and all property. I acknowledge this lifestyle does not condone lying, cheating, stealing, and other dishonorable acts. Committing to this code demonstrates my respect for JSerra Catholic High School as we strive to glorify God and love others.
